About Clark Hillel
About Clark Hillel:
Clark Hillel is the student group that celebrates Jewish culture, identity, pluralism, and community. We are proud to be one of Clark's most visible, most collaborative, and most active student groups. And we have the most student members of any group on campus. We welcome everyone to our events, students and non-students, Clarkies and folks from other schools, Jews and non-Jews, but we primarily serve students from the Colleges of Worcester Consortium schools.
Programs and Activities:
Our programs include a wide range of Jewish holiday services, social events, informal learning on a variety of topics, and social action programs. Also, Every Friday evening when classes are in session, we gather for student led Erev Shabbat (Sabbath Evening) services (usually two different styles of services at the same time) and a full kosher Shabbat (Sabbath) dinner. We aspire to integrate students with the local Jewish community and to encourage the development of their leadership skills and Judaic knowledge. We work to educate the entire community, Jews and non-Jews, about Jewish history, culture, and religion. We try to present a model of Judaism that is inclusive, accessible, and welcoming; one that is joyful and fun, passionate and justice driven, delicious and filling.
Governance and Leadership:
Our General Board is comprised of fifteen elected students who plan our weekly calendar of events and set policy for the organization. Five standing committees (Israel; Religion and Culture; Shabbat; Social; and Social Action/Tikkun Olam) have primary responsibility for designing, promoting, implementing, and evaluating programs. An Executive Board of five elected students has overall administrative responsibility for the organization. An Advisory Board made up of parents, alumni, and local community supporters assists with resource development and long range planning.
We are one of the smallest schools in the nation with a full time year round Hillel Director. David Coyne, an active leader in his synagogue and in many local political and social justice organizations and movements, is in his eleventh year as our Hillel Director. We are also supported by a staff of four student interns and a work-study assistant.
Awards and Recognition:
In the last decade, Hillel was twice nominated by Clark's "Wheatbread Magazine" as one of Clark's most improved student organizations. Awards from Clark's Student Leadership Recognition Dinners in 1999, 2001, 2004, 2005, and 2007 highlighted our strong collaborative efforts in working with other student groups. We are proud to have been selected in 2000 as the first ever recipient of a prestigious Award for Excellence in Student Government, an award given by Clark Student Council for overall group effectiveness. And in 2003 and again in 2006 we were selected as Clark's Most Active Student Group!
We are also proud that students organized by Clark Hillel's Social Action Committee were selected by the Jewish Healthcare Center's Eisenberg Assisted Living Facility as their volunteers of the year in 2001. In 2002 Clark Hillel student President Adrien Uretsky and our Director, David Coyne, were each honored by Hillel International as Exemplars of Excellence. In 2005 Clark Hillel student President Ethan Prosnit was honored as Clark's Most Active Student and David Coyne was given a special award at the Student Leadership Recognition Dinner.
